Is Tyreek Hill The Cause of Patrick Mahomes’ Interception Woes?

Last night, Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 22-9. While the AFC West Champions managed to comfortably eke past the Broncos, one thing was concerning. Star QB Patrick Mahomes has been disappointing, to say the least.

The Kansas City Chiefs put past 22 points against the Broncos in what was a sloppy affair. While the biggest positive for KC Chiefs is the win despite Mahomes not having a match winning effort, it is also a concern for them and the QB post match acknowledged this.

Mahomes after the match praised the defense but called for an improvement in the offense. “We can still get better. I think the defense is playing their tail off and keeping us in games. They’re forcing turnovers, but offensively we can still get better,” said the quarterback. “That starts with me. To win games when we’re not playing our best, we gotta keep that momentum going,”

Just like Baker Mayfield and OBJ were speculated to have a lack of chemistry between them, stats point likewise between Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill. According to NFL Research, “Patrick Mahomes has now thrown 12 INT this season (matching his career high, from 2018).”

As per PFF, “5 of those INT have come on dropped passes (most for any QB this season) and 3 of those — including tonight’s — were passes dropped by Tyreek Hill (most by any receiver).” Post match, the QB himself acknowledged missing passes but didn’t single out anyone in particular. He simply asked his teammates to stick to the basics and execute the plans properly.

“It just goes with execution. We talk about it week in and week out, but when we execute, we’re hard to stop and when we don’t, we kind of kill ourselves,” exclaimed Mahomes. “There were open throws that I missed. There were holding penalties and stuff like that. As an offense, we have to come together and find ourselves and have those drives that you saw on the first drive of the game.”
