Patrick Mahomes Set to Get More 'Weapons' From The Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs look to be in the running to give Patrick Mahomes two more offensive weapons in NFL free agency: Green Bay Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones.

Jeffri Chadiha of NFL.com reported the Chiefs are “50-50” on the idea of adding Valdes-Scantling to the Kansas City receiving corps. He also mentioned the Chiefs “feel good” about their chances of getting Jones into their backfield. These moves would come on the heels of Kansas City trading away No. 1 wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in a blockbuster deal on Wednesday.

Though neither move really moves the needle, the expectation is that Mahomes would make these two players better by operating in the same Kansas City offense.

Chiefs Kingdom is dealing with the harsh reality that comes with paying an all-world quarterback top-tier money. Eventually, Mahomes’ lofty compensation would come at the expense of other players from their Super Bowl-contending core. While tight end Travis Kelce is grossly underpaid, Hill proved too pricey for them. There is also a chance the Chiefs will not retain Tyrann Mathieu.

The good news with these two potential additions are that Jones and Valdes-Scantling come from winning organizations. Yes, they have been elevated by playing with Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers respectively, but what an opportunity to leave one future hall-of-fame quarterback for another in Mahomes. Again, there is a chance Mahomes can get the most out their NFL talents.

Ultimately, this is why teams pay star quarterbacks like Mahomes the big money. As they progress throughout their careers, the idea is that the higher they are compensated, the more they can make the talent around them better. While Valdes-Scantling and Jones are not elite players, Mahomes could be tasked with getting them to play at their optimal level now with Kansas City.

The Chiefs have to make the most of what they can in the second to third waves of free agency.
